International Women’s Day 2026: the global justice gap

International Women’s Day 2026 highlights a major global challenge: the gap in justice and legal rights between men and women.

Despite progress over the past decades, no country in the world has achieved full legal equality for women and girls. Today, women globally hold only 64% of the legal rights that men have (UN Women).

These inequalities affect many aspects of life, from safety to economic opportunity. In fact, more than half of countries do not define rape laws based on consent (UN Women), leaving survivors without adequate legal protection. Child marriage also remains legally possible in nearly three out of four countries (UN Women), while 44% of nations do not guarantee equal pay for work of equal value (UN Women).

Access to justice remains another major barrier. Women face legal or practical obstacles when seeking justice in almost 70% of countries worldwide (UN Women). Social stigma, financial limitations and weak institutions often prevent survivors from reporting violence or pursuing legal action.

Global crises further intensify these challenges. Today, around 676 million women and girls live within 50 km of active conflict zones (UN Women), where justice systems are often fragile or nonexistent.

International Women’s Day is a reminder that equality under the law is not only a matter of policy, it is essential for dignity, safety and opportunity for women and girls everywhere.
